Sheldon Rankins

Right now, Rankins is still on his rookie contract.

The 26-year old is making $3.2 million per year. That is nowhere close to where his new contract is going to be. Rankins is one of the best in the NFL at his position, but because of that, his price is going to skyrocket.

Some experts rank Rankins in the Top 10 defensive tackles in the NFL, others have him more towards No. 15. Either way, Rankins is still going to want to be paid, and rightfully so. However, Rankins has been injured most of this season.

He found himself on the IR after the game in Week 8 against the Chicago Bears. He was supposed to just miss three weeks, but he is still there. In his place, David Onyemata has been playing at a pretty good level which is good news for the Saints.

When you look at Rankins’ projected market value, he is supposed to be looking for $11.3 million per year. The Saints simply don’t have that money to pay him — especially when they have someone else on their roster that could fill the position.
