Number Two: Protecting Their Investment

The decision to go with Taysom Hill over Jameis Winston could simply be the Saints making sure they get some return for giving Hill a two-year, $21 million contract this past offseason. The Saints managed to fleece the entire NFL when they signed Jameis Winston to a one-year deal worth $1.1 million this offseason.

Saints head coach Sean Payton mentioned that it was a tough decision to pick Hill over Winston, but maybe the fact that Hill has a large salary played a big role in the decision making.

It makes too much sense for this to have not played a factor, especially considering how high the Saints have been on Jameis Winston. Winston also has extra incentives in his contract which include a Pro Bowl appearance ($40,000), playoff incentive ($1.8M), and a playing time incentive ($1.76M).

When you add these up, the great deal they got on Winston ends up being a bit more cap strapping, especially if he doesn’t live up to the expectations. Going with Taysom Hill over Jameis Winston could have been a move to save money and protect the investment they made in Taysom Hill.
