Number Two: Contract Conditions

As part of the deal bringing Kwon Alexander to the Big Easy, the Saints needed to send San Francisco a conditional fifth-round draft pick.

A conditional draft pick is defined as a draft pick as part of a trade based on the performance of the traded player and his new team. In this case, the condition of the fifth-round pick is playing time as Alexander will be competing with Alex Anzalone for playing time at WILL linebacker.

Also, if Alexander were for some reason not to fit in New Orleans, the Saints could release him while taking no salary cap hit. The Saints do love him already as he’s already been teammates with Jameis Winston, Emmanuel Sanders, and Will Clapp (LSU) throughout his entire football career.

Sean Payton was very excited for the arrival of Alexander stating: “We see him as a Will coming in, competing over there with Alex (Anzalone) with Demario playing more of the Mike role. It was something that we worked on for a little bit here and fortunately, we were able to work out the details with San Fran.”

Alexander will more than likely fit in well and be a serious factor on the New Orleans defense, but he is a low-risk addition in case things were to trend downwards.
