2021 NFL Mock Draft: Saints replace Drew Brees with Kyle Trask
The New Orleans Saints may look to replace Drew Brees sooner rather than later, and if Jameis Winston isn’t the answer, they may turn to the 2021 NFL Draft.
Sitting at 3-2, the New Orleans Saints will have to soon look for an heir to Drew Brees’ throne. The feeling within the organization seems to be that either Taysom Hill or Jameis Winston could be the answer.
The 2021 NFL Draft will feature two elite quarterbacks likely taken in the top three. Ohio State’s Justin Fields and Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence will be the big names coming out of college. They’ll headline the upcoming draft class.
For New Orleans, there will be almost zero chance they slide into the top five and have even a remote chance at either top-level quarterback. While they could trade up as they did for Marcus Davenport a few years ago, it’s doubtful that happens again.
They’ll have their first pick, in all likelihood, late in the first round given the success they’re going to have this season. With that pick though, the Saints, who have had difficult to predict drafts, may opt to take an heir to Drew Brees’ throw.
CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson, in his most recent mock draft, had the Saints selecting Kyle Trask with the 28th overall pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Trask is a 6-foot-5 quarterback from Florida.
“Drew Brees continues to struggles to throw the ball down the field, and that won’t magically improve as he gets older. Trask has only helped himself this season after just earning the starting job a year ago for the Gators. There’s a lot to like about his game, even if he’s a traditional drop-back quarterback in an age where athleticism is a big part of QB play,” Wilson wrote.
Trask has almost 1,000 yards through three games this season. He’s also rocking a 14-to-1 touchdown to interception ratio. Having neared 3,000 yards last season as a junior, Trask is clearly getting better, but the question would be if that translates to the NFL.
He’s ranked as the fourth-best quarterback in the draft. Like with Jordan Love from this past draft class, if he slides down the first round, the Saints have to take the chance on the strong-armed signal-caller.
