Using a roster spot on a second punter

If you weren’t already aware, the Saints kept two punters on their final roster, a very rare move. Nathan Beighle from Who Dat Dish recently wrote an article on Sean Payton’s explanation of why they kept two punters on the roster.

“Clearly, Payton and his staff view Gillikin as a long-term option at punter. That said, Morestead isn’t a free agent until the 2023 season, so I wouldn’t expect both of them to end the season on the team’s final 53-man roster,” he wrote.

While it might not be surprising, it certainly might go down as a mistake. However, it’s clearly about the versatility and keeping who they thought would get easily snagged by another team on their 53-man roster.

The Saints haven’t needed another punter for over a decade, but now they are going to use a roster spot on a second one. A spot that could have easily gone to help the depth at another position.

The New Orleans Saints cut their roster down to 53 people. For them, they made good decisions and hard decisions. They needed to be made; however, there are some decisions that end up being looked back on as mistakes. These might be two of them.
