Sheldon Rankins

Sheldon Rankins is our first target. Rankins would be opting out of his contract due to a non-medical reason so he would not have an accrued season. This matters the most because he is in a contract year with the Saints.

However, it is due partially to his contract situation. Rankins opting out of the year would allow the Saints and himself to come to a conclusion about his contract before Rankins gets hurt, and he doesn’t have a contract with anyone anymore.

While not getting an accrued season, Rankins could continue to train and become better, but he would be taking a season off — mind you a season that not even Goodell knows how it is going to turn out in the long run — to better himself.

The Saints and Rankins coming to a new extended contract would be in the interest of both the parties. The extra year that Rankins would take off would almost certainly lead to a new deal before the end of the year.
