4 New Orleans Saints who could opt out of the 2020 season
Due to COVID-19, this year has been one of the most confusing and concerning years that the New Orleans Saints and the world have ever had.
The New Orleans Saints, along with the other NFL teams, have been patiently awaiting what the NFL is going to due in regards to the new season. With the MLS, NHL, and NBA going to a bubble format and the MLB’s non-bubble format not working, the pressure is on.
They have already sent down a handful of stipulations around the next season, but have yet to provide concrete steps towards player’s safety. One way they are trying to help players is by giving them an opt-out option for the coming year.
This option would mean that any NFL player could choose to opt-out of playing in the 2020 season. However, if they choose to opt-out they will not be allowed to reverse that decision at any point in the middle of the season.
They will also take a massive pay cut. If the player opts out because of a medical condition, that player can receive $350,000 for the year. If they were opt-out because of a non-medical reason, that player can receive $150,000 for the year, and it will not count as an accrued year.
The Saints have already seen backup tight end Cole Wick opt-out of the year due to asthma compiled with heightened COVID-19 concerns. Ex-Saint and current free agent Larry Warford also announced that he is going to opt-out of the year.
All NFL players have until August 3rd to chose whether they will opt-out or not. Due to multiple reasons that we will discuss later, there are four main Saints players that we could see opting-out of 2020. Here is who they are.
