New Orleans Saints: Who will be the heir to Drew Brees’ throne?
By Jake Rajala
A free-agent quarterback in 2021
Sean Payton isn’t scared to make a bold move, and he will do whatever it takes to bring another Lombardi trophy to New Orleans. The Saints will boast one of the best rosters after Drew Brees retires.
The Saints could make a Super Bowl run in 2021 with a veteran quarterback who can take the reigns. The Saints will still have a prime Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas, newly acquired Emmanuel Sanders, a great offensive line where Terron Armstead is the oldest starter (29), Cameron Jordan, Demario Davis, and Marshon Lattimore.
To sum it up, the Saints should be excellent on paper for several more years.
Sean Payton will want to run it back in 2021 and how exciting would it be to bring in a free agent quarterback in 2021 who’s already good but can be better in the Saints offense.
Remember what happened in the first season in 2006 when the rookie head coach-Sean Payton signed a free agent quarterback named Drew Brees. Well, they reached the NFC championship year 1, and Sean Payton was coach of the year.
How awesome would it be for the Saints to sign a free agent quarterback like Dak Prescott?! Prescott, who will be a free agent in 2021, could be in a Saints uniform next September. Dak Prescott is only 26 years old, and he may already be better than Drew Brees. The Saints could form another dynasty, and potentially one better than they had with Brees.

The only downside of this dream is that the Saints will be strapped against the cap next year, but Mickey Loomis could get this signing done. It would be worth sending a couple of decent starters out the door. Dak could have a better offensive cast than the one he carried in 2019, where the Cowboys boasted the No. 1 offense overall.
Saints fans will love to hear more about what Sean Payton said about Prescott in 2017. Coach Payton said, “I’m not even talking or discussing sophomore slumps, I’m looking at cutups and looking at improving and inserting some new thoughts and ideas.”
Payton may be all over Prescott next offseason if the Cowboys fail to meet ends on a contract with the star quarterback.
Dallas will hope to maintain their star quarterback, and it seems likely that both sides should come to a deal. However, Sean Payton would happily be waiting with a perfect situation if Cowboys G.M. Jerry Jones doesn’t complete the contract.
Outside of Prescott, Philip Rivers will be a free agent quarterback in 2021. He’s a veteran guy who has a strong arm still, and he ran a vertical passing offense similar to the Saints as a Charger. He will be a good fit for a strong Super Bowl contender if it doesn’t work out in Indianapolis.
Nonetheless, it seems very likely that the Saints successor to Drew Brees will be a young, talented quarterback who’s been in the building for a few years.
