Number Two: Backup Quarterback

One of the most intriguing position battles coming into the 2020 training camp is who the direct backup to future Hall of Fame signal-caller Drew Brees will be. There are two main options the Saints already have on the roster but the battle looks to be intense.

The first half of this toss-up is the newly signed signal-caller, Jameis Winston. The Saints dominated the sports headlines when they inked the 2019 NFL passing yardage leader to a one year deal worth just over one million dollars.

Winston turned down higher-paying opportunities to join the Saints and I’m sure it will pay off.  Winston had a roller-coaster season in 2019 as he led the NFL in passing yards while tossing a career-high 33 touchdowns. On the flip side, he also threw 30 interceptions.

If Winston can polish his accuracy a bit, he can be the next great Saints quarterback.

The other half of this battle is a do-it-all man named Taysom Hill.

Taysom Hill is very well respected by the Saints’ coaching staff and players, but he has yet to actually play extended reps at the quarterback position. Sean Payton once compared Hill to Steve Young and said they have the same type of skill sets and that he sees Hill as the eventual starter.

Payton also said that before he was able to snag Jameis Winston for a cheaper price tag than the majority of kickers in the NFL. It will be interesting to tune into this battle throughout training camp this year.
