DT, Sheldon Rankins

Like P.J. Williams and Emmanuel Sanders, Sheldon Rankins’ contract expires at the end of the season. The only difference between them is that Rankins’ contract is worth far more than both of their contracts.

There is a likely chance that even if he is not traded, the Saints won’t pick up an extension and re-sign Rankins. It is sad to hear, but the same thing just happened to former Pro-Bowl guard Larry Warford in an effort to save money.

Rankins has one more season to prove that he is worth the money that he is going to ask for; however, it might not even matter if he does prove it. The Saints have had trouble with the salary cap for years.

We recently saw DJ Reader get a huge deal, something even the injury-prone Rankings may look for.

Just like I said with Sanders and Williams, if they don’t intend on re-signing Rankins then they should try to find someone willing to take on his contract that has the money to do so, and in return, the Saints will get something in return.
