The New Orleans Saints could still use some help at cornerback

The New Orleans Saints have a few great weapons on the defensive edge, but they could still use some help with several solid options still on the market.

In the 2017 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints brought in Marshon Lattimore, among other stars also drafted then. Lattimore has, through his ups and downs, been a stable first-string cornerback for the team.

Behind the former Ohio State star though, it’s been a cluster of mediocre No. 2s. Eli Apple was awarded the chance to play opposite of Lattimore, and as early as Week 1 of 2019, it was clear he wasn’t the answer.

When he went down relatively late in the season, the Saints brought in Janoris Jenkins. Jenkins was solid, helping the team out in the last few games despite losing early in the Wild Card round after a 13-3 season.

Jenkins will be back this season and will solidify himself as the team’s No. 2 cornerback. After him, there will be several vying for a chance at snaps. Many will play in the slot, but the team must be prepared for an injury.

Patrick Robinson, PJ Williams, and XFL interception leader Deatrick Nichols will be able to have a shot at the gig. But, all three haven’t performed well with the exception of Deatrick Nichols who played a few games for Arizona in 2018.

“While the Saints have plenty of depth at cornerback in Patrick Robinson, PJ Williams, and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, they lack depth on the outside beyond Marshon Lattimore and Janoris Jenkins,” Canal Street Chronicles’ Chris Dunnells wrote.

As Dunnells mentions, the team could use some help on the outside. That’s where Dre Kirkpatrick or Logan Ryan potentially come into play. They would be a solid addition and the Saints have the cap space to bring them in.

The release of Larry Warford freed up almost $8 million cap space, enough for one of these veterans that are still pending free agents. The Saints may also use that money to extend a player like Demario Davis.

There are limited weaknesses on this team, but if either Lattimore or Jenkins go down, they’ll be hurting for capable corners on the outside, one reason this should look into adding some help in the former of a free agent corner.
