Saints trade draft picks to select punter Thomas Morstead

In the 2009 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints would trade their seventh-round pick and a 2010 fifth-round pick to Philadelphia for their fifth-round pick. That 164th pick would be Saints’ punter Thomas Morstead.

Thomas Morstead is still playing in the NFL to this day — over ten years later with many more to come. Morstead has played in all but two games over that 10-year stretch. He would go on to be one of the best punters the NFL has ever seen.

The other pick that the Saints traded away also saw another punter traded. Philadelphia ended up trading that picks to the Indianapolis Colts who took Pat McAfee. Unfortunately, he is still not in the NFL at this time.

It might not look like one of the best trades Payton has ever made but to have this stability at the position for over a decade speaks to success. Will Lutz and Thomas Morstead have been concrete for the Saints’ special teams.
