Chauncey Gardner-Johnson

It may be because he didn’t start, or it might be because the Saints had a star safety in Vonn Bell that played his position. However, many Saints’ fans have forgotten their backup safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.

The 2019 rookie out of the University of Florida came into New Orleans and quickly made a name for himself even if he didn’t start. In 2019, CGJ grabbed one interception, broke up eight passes, and had one fumble recovery and one forced fumble.

On top of that, CGJ also had 49 tackles (six of which were for a loss) and 4 hits on the quarterback. To top it all off, Gardner-Johnson was the only safety/cornerback to have more forced incompletions than first downs or touchdowns allowed in the slot.

I would say that that was a pretty successful rookie season. He primed himself to be the next star on the Saints’ defense. Unfortunately, with so much going on, his name has fallen to the wayside among Saints’ fans.
