Chauncey Gardner-Johnson

Defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, CGJ, will be entering his second season in the league. A rookie drafted in the fourth round last year, CGJ played well for the bulk of the season and is considered one of the team’s rising stars.

However, that’s not how most fans view him.

Many remember the string of players in the fourth quarter against the 49ers that, in theory, sealed the Saints fate as a non-top-2 team in the NFC. On two third downs in the same drive, CGJ committed automatic first down penalties.

It was a tough outing for the rookie that’ll likely be relegated to a less impactful role by the addition of Malcolm Jenkins. That said, CGJ has all the traits to break out as a star at either cornerback or safety.

Barring any injury, CGJ will get the bulk of his snaps as the third-string corner or a backup to Jenkins or Marcus Williams. Playing all 16 games in 2019, the Saints still believe in CGJ, but he needs to keep his penalties at a minimum this season.

Gardner-Johnson, Smith, and Hill will all have impactful roles and will have quite a bit to gain from becoming an irreplaceable member of this team in 2020.
