The New Orleans Saints will be headed into the 2020 NFL season with as talented a NFL roster as there is in the entire league.

ESPN has released their latest roster rankings for the NFL and in no surprise to most, the Saints are highly ranked.

Coming in at number 1 are the Baltimore Ravens, who bring back the reigning MVP in Lamar Jackson, the league’s best rushing attack from last season, and a strong defense. Coming in at number 2 are the New Orleans Saints.

An argument can be made that the Saints are deserving of the number 1 slot. As talented as the roster was last season, the Saints still made necessary upgrades to make the roster even better. Starting with the addition of Emmanuel Sanders as a true No. 2 receiving option.

The 2-time Pro Bowler was integral in adding an important wrinkle to the 49ers passing attack last season and he was reliable, as he only dropped 1 pass all of last season.

The Saints also added some much needed veteran leadership in the secondary with the re-addition of three-time Pro Bowler Malcolm Jenkins. Coach Sean Payton once lamented letting Jenkins go back in 2013 was one of the worst coaching mistakes he’s made in his career.

And it makes sense.

Not only has Jenkins been a model of consistency, but he has been an Iron Man of sorts as he has not missed a NFL game the past six seasons and has only missed nine in 11 years. He will be vital to providing guidance to young safeties like Marcus Williams and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson in their continued development.

The Saints also drafted strong by picking up high ranking position players like center Caesar Ruiz and linebacker Zach Baun and may not be done just yet tweaking the roster.

Rumors are circulating that All-Pro defensive end Jadeveon Clowney wants to sign with a contender and the Saints are on the shortlist on teams he’s considering. A signing of Clowney could easily propel the Saints to the best roster in the NFL.

New Orleans boasts an impressive roster currently. They potentially have a Top 10 unit on every level offensively and defensively.

Talent alone won’t be enough as this team has had talent but fell short the last three seasons in disappointing fashion. They may have the number 2 roster, but hopefully, they can be the number 1 team this year.
