Saints: Michael Thomas ranked league’s best receiver entering 2020
The New Orleans Saints are absolutely loaded at almost every position, and in 2020, they’ll have the best wide receiver in the NFL.
Michael Thomas broke records last season. After signing a massive extension, Thomas came out ready to play, putting up the most receptions in a single season in NFL history, beating out Marvin Harrison‘s previous record. He was clearly the Saints’ go-to option offensively and was one of the many reasons the team ended with a mere three losses.
Thomas had a historic year, racking up 149 receptions, an NFL record, and a league-high 1,725 yards. While many didn’t consider him the league’s best due to playing with Drew Brees and being the only real target, many analysts knew that Thomas was a clear level above the field.
That said, CBS Sports’ Jared Dubin ranked Michael Thomas first overall in terms of wide receivers entering 2020. Julio Jones and Tyreek Hill came in second and third respectively. Rivals like Chris Godwin also cracked the list.
As far as 2020 is concerned, it’ll be almost impossible for Thomas to continue improving his numbers. He’ll have recently-signed Emmanuel Sanders, a fully-healthy Alvin Kamara and a highly-impactful Jared Cook to compete with.
But, those three either recovering, improving or signing should help the Saints become a more dominant organization despite potentially taking away the limelight from the 27-year-old Thomas.
Entering his fifth season in the league and being a Pro Bowler for three of them, Thomas has transcended the Saints franchise and given Drew Brees the act weapon that he’s needed to keep his play elevated at such a high level.
Along with Kamara, Thomas has helped the Saints offense be one of the league’s best over the last few seasons, and he’s just now started getting the credit that he deserves for the team’s high-level success.
