CBS Sports ranks Drew Brees the NFL’s fourth-best quarterback in 2020
The New Orleans Saints will once again be led by 41-year-old Drew Brees, who was recently ranked the league’s fourth-best quarterback.
Drew Brees has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL for quite some time, and he’s continued to not get the respect that he’s deserved. Having been forgotten about in the MVP race on a yearly basis, Brees has put up numbers that have never before been seen in the league.
That’s why, now, even at 41, Brees has dominated the competition, winning three straight NFC South titles and having won one Super Bowl in 2009 as well. Entering 2020, he’s looking to lead the league in completion percentage for the fourth consecutive season.
Brees is still among the best quarterbacks, not only in the conference but in the entire league. Because of his percentage and efficiency, Brees has been ranked the fourth-best quarterback entering the new season.
Here’s part of what CBS Sports’ Sean Wagner-McGough wrote on the aging quarterback.
“For as much attention as Brady’s longevity has gotten, Brees is aging just as well. In his age-40 season, he completed a league-high 74.3 percent of his passes, averaged 7.9 yards per attempt, threw a touchdown on a career-high 7.1 percent of his passes and an interception on only 1.1 percent of his passes, and generated a passer rating of 116.3, the best of his career. If not for a thumb injury that cost him five starts, he would’ve been in the MVP discussion (again),” CBS Sports’ Sean Wagner-McGough wrote.
Brees was only beaten in the rankings by Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, Ravens’ Lamar Jackson, and Seahawks’ Russell Wilson, the top three quarterbacks from first to third. While Brees was rather high on the list, history tells us that he’ll again have a solid season in the Big Easy.
What makes it even easier to put him that high is the fact that Brees has enhanced weaponry surrounding him this season. Emmanuel Sanders, the 49ers’ No. 1 receiver last season, was added on a two-year deal this offseason.
Sanders, Michael Thomas, Alvin Kamara, an improved offensive line, and an in-stride Jared Cook will help Drew Brees potentially hit career numbers. This is the type of season Drew Brees needs to get his team back to the top of the NFC.
The Saints will be the best team in the NFC in 2020, and they’ll do so behind their top-five quarterback Drew Brees.
