In 2021, the New Orleans Saints will have Alvin Kamara and Sheldon Rankins up for free agency, can they afford to pay Rankins his market value?

The New Orleans Saints are blessed to have one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL on their roster and for only $3 million a year. However, that will not be the case when free agency rolls around next year in 2021.

Along with Alvin Kamara, Sheldon Rankins headlines the Saints free-agent class in 2021. Both players will be looking for massive pay upgrades from the current contracts they are working on right now.

However, they aren’t even all the free agents for the mighty Saints. Almost the entire linebacking corps will also be up for new contracts. While Mickey Loomis has been terrific with managing cap space, money will be scarce.

Specifically, defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins is making $3.2 million per year, but his market value in the upcoming free agency period is roughly $11.3 million per year, according to spotrac. The Saints will not be able to sign both players to massive contracts.

Not signing Rankins would also free up enough cap space to sign star running back Alvin Kamara if it came to choosing between the two. Here are three other defensive tackles the Saints could sign in 2021 free agency instead of Rankins.
