Number Three: Secondary Depth

The Saints’ scariest need coming into the offseason was in the secondary. They came with several questions to be answered.

Were the Saints going to bring Vonn Bell back? Would Marshon Lattimore hold out for a long-term deal? Would the Saints be able to restructure contracts to create more cap space?

The Saints opted to let Vonn Bell sign with the Cincinnati Bengals following the signing of three-time Pro Bowler Malcolm Jenkins to replace him at the strong safety position. The Saints also exercised Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore’s fifth-year option keeping him under contract through the 2022 season.

The Saints also decided to let cornerback Eli Apple walk in free agency and chose to sign the XFL’s Deatrick Nichols (who led the XFL in interceptions) instead. They restructured the contracts of Patrick Robinson and Janoris Jenkins to create more cap space.

The Saints re-signed special teams ace Justin Hardee and hard-hitting safety DJ Swearinger as well.
