The Carolina Panthers released star quarterback Cam Newton. Could he be just the backup quarterback the New Orleans Saints are looking for?

The New Orleans Saints went into this free agency period with two unrestricted free agents and one restricted free agent at quarterback.

The re-signed aging future Hall of Famer Drew Brees. Teddy Bridgewater was the other unrestricted free agent. They placed Taysom Hill on a first-round tender so he’ll likely be staying around as well.

Bridgewater ended up leaving for the division rival Carolina Panthers. He will be their starting quarterback going forward. The last one is Taysom Hill. The New Orleans Saints put a first-round tender on him as a restricted free agent.

The jury is still out as Hill is still a free agent, but all the signs point back to him re-signing with New Orleans. However, last year, Hill only threw five passes with only three completions. Not necessarily the backup quarterback you can trust.

When Brees went down last year, Bridgewater was the one who took over, not Hill. Hill will not be the answer next year, but the Panthers released Cam Newton earlier this week. Here is why Newton could be just the backup the Saints have been looking for.
