New Orleans Saints: 3 free agent QBs that could replace Teddy Bridgewater
Jameis Winston is another free agent with some big numbers to back his name, but not many people are interested in buying the talent.
With someone like Brady being brought in to the Bucs organization, it’s only a matter of time until Winston is shown the door. Brady signed a 2-year, $50 million contract and that means that Winston is going to have to find work elsewhere.
Last season, Winston led the entire league in passing yards, but those big numbers come at a cost. Not only did he lead the league in passing yards, but interceptions and turnovers as a whole.
His 30 picks were nowhere close to the rest of the league, and honestly, the number should have been higher. 21 other interceptions were dropped by defenders.
That kind of high-risk, high-reward playstyle is not too appealing to teams searching for a safe option at the quarterback position.
Sure, Winston received eye surgery this offseason that is intended to help him see his options better, but much of those turnovers come from his decision-making rather than his eyesight.
He will have to resist his urges to throw up misguided passes and make smarter decisions if he wishes to play anywhere next season.
Considering the market is closing on destinations who require quarterback services, Winston may also need to accept a pay cut in order to find a spot on a roster.
There is no doubt that Winston is one of the more talented quarterbacks in the league, but teams are not going to be willing to pay a top quarterback’s salary for a turnover machine that they don’t necessarily need at the moment.
Many of the teams who still need quarterbacks are in a position to land a top prospect in the upcoming draft. If a team wishes to land Winston’s talents, then they will have to negotiate a smaller contract and a possible backup position with him.
Time on the bench behind a better playmaker and groomed veteran with superior decision-making may even help reform Winston into a smarter player for the future.
