The New Orleans Saints made their first move of the 2020 offseason by re-signing defensive tackle, David Onyemata.

The New Orleans Saints are currently one of the teams with the top number of free agents. In total, they have 24 free agents. Because of this, there are a lot of decisions that are going to have to be made this offseason.

Who are they going to sign? Who are they going to let go of? How much money do they have to spend to retain players? How much leftover money do they have to sign replacements? All of these questions are about to come to ahead.

On March 16th, the New Orleans Saints made their first decision of the offseason and that decision was to re-sign current defensive tackle — David Onyemata. Onyemata started in 15 of the 16 Saints regular-season games last year.

After proving worth his value, the Saints sought him out to be the first re-sign. Last year, Onyemata finished with 3.0 sacks, 32 tackles, 11 quarterback hits, and one pass defended on the line of scrimmage.

The 27-year-old is coming off of a contract worth $720,568 per year. For a top defensive tackle, that is not that much. However, the new contract that Onyemata signed could be worth over $10 million per year.

While the full details on David Onyemata’s contract are still unknown at this time, the tackle could be in for a huge payday and rightfully so. The New Orleans Saints made a big move early and one that will help solidify their defensive line.

Looking toward next year, Onyemata should continue to start on the line for the Saints. In 2018, he had 4.5 sacks. It would be great to see him lapse 5.0 sacks in next year’s season for the first time in his career.
