New Orleans Saints: Could Michael Thomas be the best receiver ever?
By Sean Nief
Conclusion
Best case, Thomas could be another Larry Fitzgerald and play into his late thirties with minimal decline in his level of play.
Being reasonable and saying that Thomas averages 110 receptions and 1,200 yards per season for the remainder of his career, Thomas would still need to play another 14.5 seasons to catch Rice in receiving yards.
However, with that same average, Thomas would only need another 10 seasons to catch Rice’s reception total.
Football career lengths are unpredictable due to injury and many other factors. Of course, any factor like injury could derail any potential hopes to become the GOAT. This is why so few have ever attained that title in the first place.
In the end, the only way for Thomas to ever come close to the level of GOAT status is to continue to post historic seasons for another decade or so. To many, this sort of task sounds impossible, but the best players redefine the odds of possibility.
Thomas has already broken one record deemed to be practically untouchable.
When he hangs up the pads, he may as well be one of the greatest to ever play the wideout position. For now, all we can do as fans is sit back and take in the greatness of his play and be hopeful that we can witness it for years to come.
