Cornerback is a priority

Cornerback is debatably the Saint’s second-highest priority this offseason, behind wide receiver. So what’s the plan of action for Mickey Loomis and company?

Fortunately enough, this year’s free agency class features some intriguing options.

Titans’ cornerback Logan Ryan and Cowboys cornerback Byron Jones are two high-profile, high-cost options to explore. Ryan is coming off a career year that included four forced fumbles, while Jones has been one of the few defenders to slow down Michael Thomas.

That being said, both Jones and Ryan will undoubtedly attract more than a few suitors, meaning the Saints will have to bid. Sticking their necks out for aging defensive studs is risky, but could be the difference between another early playoff exit and a title.

A cheaper option is Trae Waynes. Waynes has shown flashes of absolute greatness throughout his time in Minnesota, but his shot at being called one of the best in the league seems to have come an gone.

The Saints, though, don’t need Waynes to be brilliant; they just need a physical corner to compliment Lattimore. Putting Waynes alongside a younger stud like Lattimore could take the pressure off his shoulders, allowing him to relax with his game.
