New Orleans Saints’ Michael Thomas is Offensive POY favorite
With the MVP race coming to a close, New Orleans Saints’ superstar Michael Thomas is going to come up short of that award. However, the Offensive Player of the Year is still within his grasp.
New Orleans Saints’ superstar wide receiver Michael Thomas smashed Marvin Harrison’s NFL single-season receptions record. He came close to beating the NFL single-season receiving yards record as well.
The performance that Thomas has had this season has been unprecedented for any wide receiver to come before him. Not only is he going to go down in Saints’ history with this season; he is going down in NFL history as well.
With the NFL MVP award most likely going to Lamar Jackson or Russell Wilson, a quarterback, Michael Thomas’ best shot at an NFL award is the Offensive Player of the Year; which, according to ProFootballTalk, he is the favorite and won their OPOY award.
The other competitor for this award is Carolina Panther running back Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey had a season for the ages but not a season for the record books. McCaffrey recorded over 1,000 yards rushing and receiving which has only been done by a handful of players ever.
Even with this being the case, Michael Thomas should still be the clear-cut front runner for the NFL Offensive Player of the Year. He finished this regular season with 149 receptions for 1,725 yards and nine touchdowns — all being personal career highs for the star.
The Ohio State Buckeye wide receiver has made more of a case for the Offensive Player of the Year than any other candidate. This would be only the third time this award has been won by a New Orleans Saint and the second player to ever do it. (Drew Brees twice)
As the New Orleans Saints look to the Minnesota Vikings first-round playoff game, this should not take the light off of the season that Michael Thomas had. New Orleans’ fans should relive this wide receiver’s season for years to come.
