Wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith made a game-changing touchdown reception in Week 1, solidifying himself as the Saints’ WR3.

The New Orleans Saints, all throughout training camp and preseason, were looking for that receiver to take the next step. They knew they had Michael Thomas and Ted Ginn Jr. Who else would step up?

In the team’s thrilling Week 1 victory against Houston, it was Tre’Quan Smith.

Smith was the only receiver on the Saints not named Michael Thomas or Ted Ginn Jr. to see a target. He was targeted twice, catching both for 26 yards and a touchdown. In some ways, this was exactly what the team needed from Smith.

No, he didn’t go for 100-plus yards, two touchdowns, and eight receptions. That’ll be a Thomas-like performance that’ll ultimately come at some point this season. That’s not what the team necessarily needs from Smith.

They need an athletic, third-string receiver with consistent hands. On Monday night, that’s what Smith showed he had. On Smith’s most notable play of the night, he benefited off Brees keeping the play in motion and finding him in the back of the end zone.

You have to give some credit to Smith here. Not only did he secure the catch, but he kept moving. He kept the play alive and helped Brees have a target. This was a huge play that ultimately helped change the game, putting the Saints up 24-17.

Smith didn’t play much during the preseason, but his 2018 campaign was promising. He secured 100-plus yards twice, one against Philadelphia which was a 157-yard outing where he also totaled two touchdowns.

The skillset is there, and Smith has continued to prove that he can elevate his game to be a consistent threat for Brees. It’s not Keith Kirkwood. It’s not Austin Carr. It’s Tre’Quan Smith, and you should get used to hearing his name.
