New Orleans Saints expected to sign former Giants QB Ryan Nassib
It looks like the New Orleans Saints are adding another quarterback to the mix.
News broke Monday afternoon that the New Orleans Saints are expected to sign former New York Giants quarterback Ryan Nassib. Nassib, a former Syracuse Orangemen, was drafted in the 4th round of the 2013 NFL Draft. In his NFL career, although he hasn’t had much playing time, Ryan Nassib totaled 128 yards, a completion percentage of 90%, 2 touchdowns, and an averaged passer rating of 152.1.
Although this move makes perfect sense for the Saints, a team with no “exact” backup in the waiting behind Drew Brees, it won’t be easy for Nassib. He, at this point, has to go through the experienced veteran quarterback Chase Daniel, and 2015 3rd round selection Garrett Grayson.
Given, with the uncertainty of Garrett Grayson, and veteran Chase Daniel already in his thirties, this could be Nassib’s time to shine. If you look at it that way.
During his time with Syracuse, Nassib totaled 791 completions on 1,312 passes, an average career completion percentage of 60.3%, 9,190 passing yards, a passer rating of 132.5, 70 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions.
I live in Syracuse, New York. And I’m obviously an enthusiastic fan of the New Orleans Saints. So my face lit up when I heard the news. I knew that Nassib played fairly well for Syracuse, and now will be getting a second opportunity to show what he is made of.
To be quite honest, the Giants never really used Nassib enough to provide enough information for me personally in regards to how Nassib had progressed. So for my analysis on just what the Saints are getting, I’ll be using college film to show what makes Nassib such a proficient quarterback.
1.) Walk the Walk, Talk the Talk
Nassib, in my opinion, has the necessary traits to do well as a quarterback in the National Football League.
He not only makes all the necessary throws but accurately assesses the situation before throwing. A few things he needs to work on, shown from his time at Syracuse, include making sure passes don’t sail over receivers heads, and not always having to rely on his gunslinger’s arm. Along with the mental awareness, and gunslingers arm, Nassib also displays pretty clean footwork.
Sure it won’t always be perfect. Sometimes in the NFL, athletes aren’t always 100% spectacular. But at the end of the day, Nassib will get it done for his team. Just like he did for Syracuse.
2.) Reading Progressions
Here’s one thing that may shock you Saints fans. Drew Brees and Ryan Nassib are very similar in one sense, progressions. Both quarterbacks go through all of their progressions time after time again. Nassib has been shown to throw to several different receivers during games, proving mentally Nassib not only reads his options but knows when to move on if someone is covered.
Similar to Drew Brees Nassib would always go through his progressions in his games at Syracuse. He threw numerous times to his third read and beyond. If you’ve watched Drew Brees by now you’d know that the Saints QB doesn’t hesitate to read through his progressions. He finds the open man, even if it is his 3rd, 4th, or 5th receiver.
3.) Pocket Presence
If Nassib reminded me of anyone currently playing in the NFL, it would be Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger. Here’s why. Standing tall at 6’2″, the 27-year-old QB similar to Big Ben has the pocket awareness and presence. Both men are very large, and in charge. Nassib, similar to Big Ben, is a tough, strong, physical athlete. Although he may not be elusive when he leaves the pocket, overall Nassib is a physical beast.
Some other great aspects of the quarterback include his endurance regarding his ability to take hits in the pocket, and his ability to extend plays on the field. At the end of the day, all that can be said is Ryan Nassib does the necessary actions to help his offense move the chains.
I just described Ryan Nassib as a quarterback with the mentality of Drew Brees, and the physicality of Big Ben Roethlisberger. Any objections?
As great as these aspects are of Nassib, he needs the opportunity to display them. He may get that opportunity now with the New Orleans Saints. I believe if Nassib performs well he could compete for the Saints backup quarterback position. He should at least beat out Grayson.
At this point in time Nassib may only be brought in for a camp body, but who knows. Other than that, Who Dat Dish wants to know what you think!
What do you think of the Saints newest acquisition?
