New Orleans Saints Draft: Ranking The Top 20 QB Prospects
By Dean Mullen
The Saints are likely to at least bring a QB into training camp in 2017. The Black and Gold may draft one or pick one up after.
In my opinion, the Saints should wait till at least the sixth round to consider picking a quarterback. There is talk that the Saints are in love with QB Patrick Mahomes from Texas Tech. However, who knows what’s the truth behind closed doors.
There are most likely four quarterbacks that will be drafted early: Mitch Trubisky, DeShone Kizer, Deshaun Watson, and Patrick Mahomes. In most of the mock drafts out there, all of them are going in the first two rounds.
In any case, everyone has their own favorite guy to bring in to be the next heir apparent to Drew Brees eventually. The quarterbacks that would be an excellent fit will be highlighted in bold. Personally, there are three on the list of 20 that would be excellent ambassadors to follow in the footsteps of one of the greatest quarterbacks to have ever played the game. Accordingly, here is my list from top to bottom.
- DeShone Kizer- Notre Dame
- Deshaun Watson- Clemson
- Mitch Trubisky- North Carolina
- Patrick Mahomes- Texas Tech
- Chad Kelly- Ole Miss
- Nate Peterman- Pittsburgh
- Josh Dobbs- Tennessee
- Davis Webb- California
- Brad Kaaya- Miami (Fla.)
- Zach Terrell- Western Michigan
- Sefo Liufau- Colorado
- C.J. Beathard- Iowa
- Jerod Evans- Virginia Tech
- Alex Torgerson- Penn
- Cooper Rush- Central Michigan
- Seth Russell- Baylor
- Mitch Leidner- Minnesota
- Gunner Kiel- Cincinnati
- Trevor Knight- Texas A&M
- Ryan Higgins- Louisiana Tech
In short, if the Saints go mid round Josh Dobbs would be a great pick. Furthermore, if the Saints wait till the sixth or seventh round either Chad Kelly or Zach Terrell would be a excellent addition. Regardless, there is just too many other holes to fill to pick a QB this year early.
Also, there is not one guy that stands out to be considered a lock. So there is my list.
