Drew Brees, Saints reportedly working on four-year extension
The New Orleans Saints and quarterback Drew Brees are reportedly working on an extension that would keep him in the Big Easy another four years after the 2016 season, according to ESPN.
Everybody is waiting for the widely-speculated Drew Brees extension, which would not only free up cap space, but would also guarantee the star quarterback finishes his career with the New Orleans Saints.
At the moment, the Saints are set to pay Drew Brees $30 million in 2016 — the NFL’s biggest cap hit for any player this year. Head coach Sean Payton, who agreed to an extension himself on Wednesday, said the two parties are trying work out a deal that would be fair for both sides.
During a radio interview on Monday, Brees offered no timetable for a new deal.
“I’ve got, obviously, a very strong relationship with the Saints,” Brees told ESPN Radio Baton Rouge. “Talks are ongoing, and I don’t know if that is something that will be done next week or before the end of the year, or next year or when. But obviously, I want to be a Saint for the rest of my career, and I think I’ve got a lot of good years left.”

“Of course I’m involved, but I have my agent for a reason. That’s his job, and so I allow him to do his job. Despite what might be portrayed as far as the business aspect of it for all players and all teams, listen, it’s a negotiation, so there’s always back-and-forth. I will allow them to take care of that. But I will only report when something is done.”
But today, it sounds like progress is being made. Drew Brees’ current plan expires after this season. If the 37-year-old quarterback does sign a new four-year deal, he will be under contract in New Orleans until he is 41, a good age for retirement, perhaps.
While he is no longer in his prime years, leading the league in passing for an NFL-record sixth time in 2015 proved that he can still play at an elite level. Talks continue between the Saints, Drew Brees, and his power agent Tom Condon.
