CB Delvin Breaux lights it up at New Orleans Saints OTAs

The New Orleans Saints wrapped a session of OTAs Wednesday afternoon, and it sounds like first-year cornerback Delvin Breaux was the star of the day.

The former Canadian Football League standout and New Orleans native was all over the field running with the first team while Brandon Browner was on the sideline.  Whether it was breaking up several passes or coming away with a one-handed interception, Breaux had a great day displaying his promising athleticism.

Coach Sean Payton spoke with the media following practice, discussing several subjects including Delvin Breaux.

“He’s doing well, he’s picked things up,” Payton said. “The mental element of it he’s handled pretty well. He’s in real good shape, you can see that now. We’ll continue to work on the fundamentals, but he’s handled things, the installation, all of that really well, so it’s encouraging. He made some plays today.”

Many players have been switching over from the CFL to the NFL — we saw that from Marcus Ball a year ago.  Ball was released by the Saints earlier this offseason and picked up by the Carolina Panthers.  The transition is tough but Breaux, once a top college recruit (LSU) before a devastating high school injury, looks to change that.

“It just depends on the player,” Payton said about Delvin’s transition. “Some guys can pick things up fairly quickly, other guys need more time. From a football standpoint, there are handful of things that are different. The motions up there are much different than what we see, and yet, there are a fair amount of the same coverages we’re playing.”

As minicamp and training camp approach, Delvin Breaux will continue to battle his way to a spot on the final roster.  With nine cornerbacks currently in the mix, it will certainly be no cake walk, but so far so good.
