We’re back for another jam-packed edition of Daily News for your New Orleans Saints! I trust you all had a great weekend. Can you believe we’re in June already? Here’s some articles that are sure to interest you today.
The biggest news of the day stems from the team reaching an agreement with veteran center, Jonathan Goodwin, who played for the Saints from 2006-2010. Just remember, there has not been an official transaction, but both sides are ‘close’ to a deal.
Christopher Dabe | Times -Picayune | Wide receiver Robert Meachem ‘mentally free’ in first offseason back with New Orleans Saints
"“I’m mentally free,” Meachem said Saturday during a football camp at the Joe W. Brown Recreation Center. This is unlike last offseason. Still with the Chargers then, Meachem needed to figure out how to improve from a disappointing first season in San Diego."
Robert Meachem’s revival with the Saints last year is one of the better stories to evolve from the 2013 season. Some players wouldn’t take similiar events so well, but Robert Meachem stuck through everything. Meachem overcame adversity, and put together a very (overlooked) good season with the team. Meachem faces some competition this year (Brandin Cooks, Joe Morgan, Andy Tanner, Nick Toon), but I think we will see at least six wide receivers on the active roster this year, which should mean goo things for Meachem’s future.
Mike Triplett | ESPN | Breakout candidate, defense: Akiem Hicks
"“I think he is kind of coming into his own and finding his role in that front,” said Brees, who said he has been impressed by what he’s seen across the line. “He’s a big physical guy and fits perfectly for our defensive structure with the 3-4. Big, strong, powerful, in both in the run and the pass. He’s got good awareness. I like it when you see young guys like that develop. I’m glad he’s on our side.”"
I’ve been a huge Akiem Hicks supporter, and have been for quite some time. Hicks has been a monster on the outside, and should improve on his 4.5 sacks from a year ago. Much of the attention goes to Cam Jordan, and with second-year nose tackle John Jenkins plugging the middle, this line should continue to flourish.
Ramon Antonio Vargas | The Advocate | Saints’ OL Weaver plays for his brother and the young son he left behind
"After his older brother was shot and killed in New Orleans almost eight years ago, Jason Weaver and his relatives decided he needed to leave the city as soon as he graduated high school to pursue both an education and a football career in college."
The only thing I will say about this article is to check it out. I can’t tell you how awesome of a story this is.
New Orleans Saints | New Orleans Saints schedule for 2014 Training Camp presented by Verizon
"The New Orleans Saints 2014 Training Camp Presented by Verizon will feature a total of 27 practices for fans to watch the team, starting at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.V. and ending at their Metairie practice facility."
Yesterday officially made 14 weeks until we get our sanity back in the form of Saints football. If you haven’t attended a training camp in your life, be sure to check one of these out. These are extremely fun to watch. The worst part of these is the heat, so be prepared.
