New Orleans Saints still showing interest in tight ends
The New Orleans Saints‘ free agent hunt may not be finished just yet. According to reports, Tim Wright drew interest from the Black and Gold after the New England Patriots surprisingly cut ties with the tight end over the weekend. The Saints were one of ten teams to submit a waiver claim on him, but he will rejoin his former team after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won out on the sweepstakes.
While Wright would have been a solid acquisition, it just comes to show that New Orleans is likely not done making moves. Pro Bowl TE Jermaine Gresham, who visited with the team less than two weeks ago, remains a free agent, and could be one of several options if the club does decide to pull the trigger on another pass catcher in the absence of Jimmy Graham.
2015 undrafted free agent Harold Spears seemed promising at first, however, he was waived by the New Orleans Saints in order to make room for the team’s most recent addition in veteran defensive tackle Kevin Williams.
Josh Hill still remains a viable option to come in and start, along with Benjamin Watson and Orson Charles, who have both been impressive at organized team activities. But adding another camp body would certainly do no harm to bring in a little competition to the mix. But either would acquiring a proven veteran.
Like I said, Gresham remains a free agent. The former Cincinnati Bengals stud and two-time Pro Bowler boasts excellent size, good speed and hands, and respectable versatility, making him a match-up nightmare for most defenses. We’ve seen what he’s capable of doing in a system with Andy Dalton under center. Just imagine his potential with somebody like Drew Brees tossing the football.
Coach Sean Payton recently spoke highly of Gresham, confirming his visit to the Big Easy and rendering him a good fit. “He’s a player that we were obviously well aware of coming out five years ago in the draft,” Payton said. “We thought the visit went pretty good. I think there’s a fit for us if it works out. He’s a guy we’ve studied quite a bit now in the last couple months. It was just finding the right time, and it was good to have that chance to meet him.”
If the New Orleans Saints truly are looking for an additional tight end, Gresham, who is currently recovering from offseason back surgery to repair a herniated disc, just makes too much sense. Another notable option is Zach Miller (the more polished Zach Miller) after he was released by the Seattle Seahawks in March due to a failed physical.
The Saints may be happy with their current situation, but after that claim was submitted on Tim Wright, it shows that their door may still be open. The more potential weapons for Drew Brees, the better.
