Saints coach Sean Payton impressed with rookie QB Garrett Grayson

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton spoke with the media during rookie minicamp Saturday afternoon, discussing a number of topics.  Of course, questions were asked about rookie QB Garrett Grayson, the Colorado State product who looks to be Drew Brees‘ successor when the future Hall-of-Famer decides to hang up his hat.

“It’s been impressive,” Sean Payton said about Grayson. “He’s a quick decision maker, he’s got good arm strength, his athleticism, he’s in shape, and you guys will have a chance to see him soon at practice.  He’s been real effective.

“I said this to Pete (Carmichael) — we’ve got three quarterbacks in this camp, one under contract (Grayson) and then two tryout quarterbacks (Justin Worley, Taylor Graham). All three of them I would say have been one of the better combinations of quarterbacks in a rookie camp that we’ve had, so that’s encouraging. But he’s (Grayson) been sharp. He’s a quick study and he’s very accurate,” Payton said.

The Saints made the decision to draft Garrett Grayson with one of their two third-round picks.  It was a bit of a surprise — the pre-draft workout and meeting with the team flew under the radar for the most part.  Most thought Baylor QB Bryce Petty would be the guy if New Orleans did make the decision to draft a quarterback.

However, that was not the case.  In fact, Sean Payon said if Grayson wasn’t available, then the club would have probably passed on a QB all together.  Those are encouraging words coming from a head coach, especially Payton, whose decision making should not be questioned in the quarterback department.

Garrett Grayson is a promising young talent with a very bright future.  He’s got at least two years to learn behind one of the all-time greats in Brees, whose current contract expires in 2017.  Many want to compare the Saints QB situation to the Brett FavreAaron Rodgers scenario in Green Bay years ago, which is promising.  But only time will tell if Grayson can be that guy.  The opportunity is certainly set up for success.
