The Big Fat Cut Breakdown: New Orleans Saints Move To 75

The first major roster cuts loom for all NFL franchises today as teams must get to the 75 player maximum requirement by 4:00 PM, the Saints are underway in doing just that. For the Saints that means parting ways with promising young talent and veteran players alike — Darren Sharper and Clint Ingram are the biggest fish perhaps on the proverbial chopping block. Both veteran players underwent knee surgery this off-season and so far have been unable to practice with the team to date.

After injuring his groin in the second quarter of the Saints preseason win over the San Diego Chargers last Saturday Saints fans held their breath in anticipation of the severity of the injury to the unheralded captain of the defense — Jonathan Vilma.

The Saints are coming off two straight pre-season wins over the Houston Texans and San Diego Chargers after dropping their first to the New England Patriots. In their latest victory over the Chargers the Saints seemed to finally find some answers on special teams specifically on kick and punt return coverage, an area that’s needed vast improvement after giving up nearly 200 yards to the Patriots and about the same to the Texan’s.

Interview With Former Saints First Round Pick OT Kyle Turley Turned “Power Country” Star

Kyle Turley was a first round pick of the Saints in 1998 out of San Diego State appearing in 79 games as the starting tackle in his five seasons with the black and gold. Turley is perhaps best remembered for his antics during a 2001 game against the New York Jets when after a heated fight with Jets defender Damien Robinson he emerged with his helmet only to throw it across the field afterward giving an obscene gesture.

Linebacker K.C. Asiodu Signs With Saints For Depth, Special Teams

A day after the release of veteran linebacker and former special teams captain Troy Evans  the Saints have signed second year linebacker K.C. Asiodu (6 -2 242)  formerly of the St. Louis Rams. Asiodu was an undrafted rookie last season and was signed by the Rams and cut in the final roster trim before being resigned to the practice squad.

The Saints front office has decided to get a jump on trimming the roster waiving veteran linebacker Troy Evans, corner Danny Gorrer, guard Tim Duckworth, receivers Rod Harper and Mark Bradley late Tuesday night. The most notable of which is linebacker Troy Evans who has been with the team since signing a two year deal in 2007. New Orleans Saints: Injuries Continue To Haunt Running Back Group

Injuries continue to mount inside the Saints running back group after running back P.J. Hill was placed on injured reserve with a partially torn triceps he suffered Saturday during the Saints 38-20 preseason win over the Houston Texans. Hill is the second running back to be placed in IR after running back Lynell Hamilton, considered the favorite to start as the third running back for the upcoming season, also was placed on injured reserve after he tore his ACL days before the Saints first preseason game against the New England Patriots two weeks ago.

Tough love. The Saints have been dishing it out ever since a sloppy loss in their pre-season opener against the New England Patriots.
