The Saints announced today that they have parted ways with veteran LS Kevin Houser, to acquire what they feel is an upgrade at the position, LS Jason Kyle.
“Jason is a quality veteran player and we saw in him a chance to upgrade our kicking game,” Loomis said. “I’ve known him since we drafted him in Seattle and going up against him twice a year for the last eight seasons with Carolina, he has always been impressive. I’d also like to thank Kevin for nine seasons of excellent service to the Saints and wish him all the best in the future.”

Last season Drew Brees threw for 5,069 yards, the second largest single season total since Dan Marino’s 5,084 yard performance in 1984.
His offensive prowess earned him his third trip to the pro-bowl, on top of being named the 2008 NFL Offensive Player of the Year.
Even with Brees’ eye popping performance the Saints fell short of the playoffs for the second straight year, ending the season at 8-8.
There is a laundry list as to why this happened, and primarily the defense is to blame, but that’s another article.
Brees is as optimistic as he has ever been, confident that the 2009 season will [...]
The last meeting between these two teams (October 2, 2005) was played by the post Katrina Saints, long before the likes of Payton, Brees, or Bush. The league considered it a home game for New Orleans who played in their adopted stadium of the Alamodome.
On the leg of ex-saint kicker John Carney (4-5 on filed goals), the Saints prevailed beating the Bills 19-7, thus securing one of their lone wins of the 2005 season.
On a side note the Saints would end up winning only one more game that season finishing a dismal 3-13. This of course led to the firing of then head coach [...]
Anthony Hargrove just may be the Saints most surprising player acquisition of this off-season.
Hargrove has impressed coaches and players with his extraordinary athletic ability and new found commitment to professional football.
Hargrove was selected in the third round (91st overall) by the St.Louis Rams during the 2004 draft. He signed a three year contract with the Rams playing strictly as reserve in 2004, totaling 31 tackles (23 solo) and recording one sack.
The following season Hargrove was awarded the starting right defensive end position, where he showcased his true potential, totaling 51 tackles (43 solo) and 6.5 sacks.
Early on in the 2006 season, [...]

Sean Payton announced today in his press conference that the team has placed undrafted rookie center Alex Fletcher on the reserved/retired list due to a life threatning kidney issue.
The complete details of the problem are unkown, but apparently Fletcher is already down one kidney while the other is in serious enough condition to possibly end the Stanford product’s pro career before it ever starts.
“Unfortunately, Alex will not be able to continue to play because of the medical issue,” Payton said. “He has one kidney and the one kidney he has needs some work. It’s pretty serious. He was upset and disappointed [...]
The last game between these two teams (December 23, 2007) saw Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb light up the Saints secondary to the tune of 263 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Westbrook totaled 100 yards on the ground to help seal the Eagles victory over the Saints 23 – 38. Once again the Saints were left looking for defensive answers en-route to finishing a disappointing 7-9.
On a side note New Orleans swept the Eagles during the 2006 season, knocking them off in a NFC divisional playoff game. The playoff win secured the teams first appearance in an NFC championship game.
Next Meeting: Sunday, September 20th, 2009
Location: Lincoln Financial Field

For the second time in 13 months linebacker Dan Morgan has retired, according to his agent Drew Rosenhaus, who announced the retirement on his twitter page.
Rosenhaus says this time around the decision is final and that Morgan would not pursue another comeback to the NFL.
“Dan Morgan has informed the Saints that he has decided to retire due [to] continued injuries,” Rosenhaus said. “Dan would like to thank the Saints for the chance to come back this year, but injuries would not let him continue his career. His decision [is] final and he will be moving on to focus on his [...]
Yesterday marked the end of the Saints first mini-camp. By all accounts it was a rousing success and definitely a very solid showing for the new look defense.
Reports have the Saint defense playing with more intensity and energy than in recent years – safeties flying in for sacks, linebackers stopping runs at the line of scrimmage, the secondary blanketing coverage and picking off passes, and constant pressure on the quarterback.
What a difference a year makes as new DC Williams is clearly installing his brand of defense, changing the culture once and for all. There is only one word that can [...]
