Saints Add on Day 2

AUTHOR: | IN: Saints | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Saints continued their solid draft on Sunday adding solid prospects in the later rounds. Early in round 5, the Saints traded up 2 spots (skipping the Bengals again) to select NC State DT DeMario Pressley. Pressley had an injury-prone career at NC State but had the talent to be taken much higher. With the addition of him and Sedrick Ellis this past weekend, the defensive tackle position appears to now be deep. Later on in round 5 the Saints picked Nebraska OT Carl Nicks. Like Pressley, Nicks had the talent to be taken higher but has his share of [...]

Saints Select CB Tracy Porter

AUTHOR: | IN: Draft, Saints | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

The Saints chose CB Tracy Porter from Indiana University with the 40th selection in the draft. Porter had a very solid career at Indiana, recording 16 interceptions. Porter is known as a ball-hawk and should add solid depth in the secondary. The saints corners now include: Mike McKenzie, Randall Gay, Jason David, Usama Young, Aaron Glenn and now Porter. I like this pick for the simple fact that it was defense. Jeremy Shockey would have been nice considering Drew Brees is the quarterback but its no secret where the Saints weakness was. Ellis and Porter, although not the sexy picks, [...]

Saints Trade Up; Select Ellis at #7

AUTHOR: | IN: Saints | COMMENTS: None Yet

I suggested earlier this morning that I could see a scenario in which the Saints trade up a few spots and select USC DT Sedrick Ellis. Sure enough after a botched attempt to trade up with the Chiefs to select Glenn Dorsey, the Saints and Patriots agreed to a trade that allowed the Saints to move up to the #7 pick. The Saints sent their first and third round picks this season for the Patriots first and fifth round picks of this season. The Saints tried frantically to trade up to the Chiefs’ #5 pick, even offering two first round [...]

NFL Draft 2008

AUTHOR: | IN: Saints | COMMENTS: None Yet

The day we have all been waiting for has arrived. And boy it seems like this day won’t let us Saints fans down with suspense and excitement. The real question is what will the Saints do? They have upped their offer for TE Jeremy Shockey but at the same time they have offered one of those picks to the Eagles for CB Lito Shepperd. Also, there is a draft today. Where will the Saints go with their top pick? Will it be a trade up for one of the defensive tackles (Dorsey or Ellis) or will it be staying pat [...]

Shockey Deal Done?

AUTHOR: | IN: Rumors, Saints | COMMENTS: None Yet

PFW is reporting that a trade sending Jeremy Shockey to the Saints might be in place. The deal is believed to involve multiple draft picks, including the Saints second round pick (40th overall). ProFootballTalk followed up the report with one of their own, claiming that Shockey has not been notified of any deal. Anyone else happy there will be a resolution to all this tomorrow? There is no denying Shockey’s talent or fire. He is a top-5 tight end when healthy there is no doubt. I’m sure this perception of him being a “cancer” is a little overblown and teammates [...]

Saints Dangling LT Brown in Trade Talks

AUTHOR: | IN: Rumors, Saints | COMMENTS: None Yet

Pete Prisco, of CBSSports.com, is reporting that the Saints are using pro-bowl LT Jammal Brown as bait for a chance to move up and select LSU DT Glenn Dorsey. Wow. Brown, the 13th overall pick in 2005, has blocked Drew Brees‘ blindside remarkably the past two seasons. This seems mind-boggling. Brown has had a history of knee injuries but has played great, although his play slipped slightly last season. The Saints must be high on a pair of recent tackles taken the past few seasons, Jermon Bushrod and Zach Strief, to consider such a move. The Saints front office definitely [...]

2008 Mock Draft

AUTHOR: | IN: Saints | COMMENTS: 6 Comments

Team 1st Round 1. Miami Dolphins – OT Jake Long, Michigan The Dolphins have a deal in place with Long and will make him the top pick in the draft. 2. St. Louis Rams – DE Chris Long, Virginia The son of hall-of-famer Howie Long, Chris is very solid in his own right. Teaming him with last seasons standout rookie Adam Carriker on the line should help a weak Rams defense. 3. Atlanta Falcons – DT Glenn Dorsey, LSU Injuries as always are a concern with Dorsey but there is no denying his superb talent. With Rod Coleman departed, Dorsey [...]

Draft, Draft, Draft

AUTHOR: | IN: Draft, Saints | COMMENTS: 8 Comments

With the 2008 draft nearing, the Saints have many options with the 10th pick overall. The Saints draft philosophy in the first round has been to take the best player available. The Saints have upgraded their entire defensive unit this offseason so it should be their mindset to take the best defensive player on the board. With that in mind here are their options at #10 or if they move up (as has been reported as a possibility). Here is a look at some of the prospects: Glenn Dorsey, DT LSU: This would be the dream pick for the Saints [...]

Is Robert Meachem a Bust Already?

AUTHOR: | IN: Saints | COMMENTS: 11 Comments

A common thought in the minds of some Saints fans is to deem first-round WR Robert Meachem a bust after not playing a single down in the 2007 season. The gifted receiver missed most of training camp with a knee injury and failed to make up for it to earn playing time during the season in which the Saints were attempting a playoff push. The question is if Robert Meachem is already a bust? In answering the question, I will look at first-round wide receivers in the past few drafts. In the past seven drafts their have been a total [...]

The Jeremy Shockey Saga

AUTHOR: | IN: Rumors, Saints | COMMENTS: 13 Comments

If you have been alive and are a football fan, then you should be very aware of the rumors lingering of a possible trade between the Saints and the Giants regarding TE Jeremy Shockey. It has been reported that the two teams discussed a possible deal involving a 2nd round draft pick and S Roman Harper. I do not believe the Saints will trade Harper to the Giants in any deal because of the simple fact they can not afford a downgrade at a position they are fairly weak in. I do believe they have a very strong interest in [...]
