Saints player No. 1: James Hurst

James Hurst is currently listed as the projected starting left tackle in preseason, but is there a scenario in which Trevor Penning leapfrogs ahead of him?

Probably not. But just to make sure, Hurst will want to put together a few nice performances to prove his value and reliability, and he can start on Saturday against the Texans.

We admit that watching a left tackle all game isn’t the most exciting thing, but the Saints’ uber-competitive LT battle has serious consequences in 2022. NOLA drafted Trevor Penning to potentially win a starting job this season, though Penning still has a lot to clean up in his game.

It doesn’t help that Penning has been picking fights with multiple Saints defenders over the course of training camp and has been exhibiting his nasty side.

While Penning can grow into a starting-caliber offensive lineman in time, we’d like to see Hurst cement his starting left tackle position and serve as a stalwart pass-protector and run-defender in the preseason.

The veteran already holds a significant advantage over the rookie, and he can come away as the landslide winner of the left tackle battle with an excellent performance against the Texans.
