Saints player No. 3: Andy Dalton

Following news of Jameis Winston’s minor foot injury, Andy Dalton will likely take starting snaps under center in the preseason opener.

The former Bengals quarterback serves as a steady backup for NOLA this season, and his performance against the Texans will be put under a microscope for a host of reasons.

For one, Dalton is the contingency plan behind Winston. If Winston gets re-injured and has to miss time in the regular season, Dalton is expected to step up to the plate and string together a few wins.

New Orleans currently still have Ian Book and Taysom Hill on the roster, both of whom could also fill in at the position, but by and large Dalton is the Saints’ QB2. The position is already his, but he can prove he’s still got an arm on him by making big plays against Houston.

Dalton spent the majority of his career in Cincinnati where he recorded a 62 percent pass completion rate. His most recent stint was on the Chicago Bears where he threw for 1,515 yards and eight touchdowns in eight games; he also posted nine interceptions, which definitely puts a stain on his record.

Regardless, Dalton enters 2022 as the go-to backup QB for the Saints, and it’ll be fun to see how he can pick apart a potentially very weak Texans secondary (no Derek Stingley Jr.!) on Saturday.
