4. Sam Darnold
The Panthers traded for former first-round pick Sam Darnold last year and it hasn’t looked to be a good move. He appeared in 12 games last year and while the beginning of the season saw Darnold look worthy of the trade, he reverted back to his Jets form not long after.
Darnold finished the 2021 season with 2,527 yards, nine touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. He had his best game against the Saints in Week 2 when he tossed for 305 yards, two scores, and one pick. That was the game early in the season when the Saints had a lot of key players out due to COVID.
The Panthers clearly showed how they feel about Darnold being their franchise quarterback by trading for Baker Mayfield. Darnold hits free agency after this year and will likely be looking for work as a backup next offseason.
While Darnold has potential, he’s yet to consistently live up to that potential.
