Saints FB from 1979-1986

In the 12th round of the 1979 NFL Draft, the Houston Oilers drafted Wayne Wilson, who never played a snap for Houston and went on to spend eight years in the Big Easy. He still sits 12th all-time in rushing yards.

The first few years of his career weren’t flashy by any means but Wilson picked things up in 1982 by rushing for 413 yards and three touchdowns. The next year was his best year in the league, as he rushed for 787 yards and nine touchdowns, both career-highs for the Shepherd product.

In 1986, Wilson split time between the Saints and Vikings and finished out his career with Washington in 1987. He was out of the league after that.

While Wilson was never the most explosive player on the team, he was mostly utilized as a fullback and those have never been big playmakers. He made the most of his opportunities in New Orleans though and sits 12th all-time in rushing yards.
