RB4: Dwayne Washington
The Saints re-signed Dwayne Washington shortly before the draft and at this point, we all know what purpose Washington serves on the roster — He’s a special teams guy.
Washington will probably make the roster but if he does, it’ll be to help out on special teams, which is something he’s done throughout his career. Last year he appeared in just 2% of the offensive snaps while appearing in 65% of the special teams snaps.
I’m not meaning this as a slight to Washington. The Saints value special teams players and that’s how Washington will likely claim the final running back spot on the roster.
RB5: Tony Jones Jr.
Last summer, Tony Jones Jr. stole the show for the Saints in both training camp and preseason. Fans were really pulling for him to make the roster over Latavius Murray and they got their wish.
Unfortunately, Jones wasn’t able to recapture that magic during the regular season, rushing for 142 yards in 11 games. He did miss a chunk of the season due to injury and that caused the Saints to then trade for Mark Ingram because Kamara was injured and then Jones went down as well. He missed his chance to shine while Kamara was out.
If Abram Smith performs well this summer, Jones might be the odd man out and find his way onto the practice squad.
