Daniel Whelan, P (California-Davis)
Daniel Whelan, much like John Parker Romo, is simply a cushion for the New Orleans Saints for the time being so that they don’t have to use their primary punter all offseason. Whelan, however, is actually a very good punter and could certainly impress the Saints and some other NFL teams across the league with his booming leg.
Whelan, who stands at 6-foot-6, played his college football at UC Davis. In 2021, Whelan punted 55 times for an average of 46.3 yards per punt with 20 of those punts landing inside the 20-yard line. Whelan is a gifted punter, but it won’t be enough to steal the job of Saints’ phenom Blake Gillikin.
Whelan could still showcase his abilities to the other 31 teams across the NFL and land a job with someone else, if need be, but it would take a tragedy to NOLA for Whelan to make the final roster.
