This year’s NFL draft has four highly ranked offensive tackles and the Saints would be ecstatic to get one of them at pick 16 without having to trade up.

Trevor Penning out of Northern Iowa would provide the Saints with an immediate replacement for Terron Armstead and allow James Hurst to move back into his role as a swing tackle and versatile backup offensive lineman.

Penning’s outstanding performance at this year’s Senior Bowl should alleviate any doubts about his level of competition coming into the draft.

The two selections prior to the Saints’ pick at 16 would have been in consideration given Jameson Williams’s immense upside as well as Jordan Davis’s electric combine performance but both were off the board when New Orleans selected.

The other consideration, of course, would be a quarterback with this pick with Kenny Pickett still available. However, it would be prudent to provide Jameis Winston the best chance at success by fortifying the offensive line and addressing the need for additional playmakers with the next selection.
