2. Michael-less wide receiver unit oozes confidence
Jalen McCleskey’s been turning up the heat. So has Chris Hogan. Add Marquez Callaway to the “fiery hot receivers at training camp” list because he’s been performing as if he was the No. 1 wide receiver. You can’t fake that kind of swagger.
With the Saints’ WR room still looking uncertain, Callaway has gotten more first-team snaps as he competes for a starting role. The 22-year-old made his NFL debut for the Saints last season, hauling in 213 receiving yards on 27 targets, but never catching a touchdown.
He’s also played with special teams as a kick returner which makes him almost too versatile for his own good. After his strong offensive display this camp, though, he could finally secure a wide receiver spot.
Maybe his mentality shifted when he changed jersey numbers. He previously wore No. 12 for the Saints before switching to No. 1 this year. Could it be a symbolic shedding of his past as he rises from the ashes and snatches the 2021 breakout season away from Tre’Quan Smith?
All we can say is, that No. 1 is looking mighty fresh in camp.
