New Orleans Saints newcomers who could start – No. 3: Payton Turner

The Saints made a shocking selection in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft by taking Payton Turner with the 28th pick. New Orleans is no stranger to making strange picks in the first round but this was an odd pick considering the team picked up Marcus Davenport’s fifth-year option despite him not playing well to this point.

Turner looks to be another version of Davenport in that he’s hailing from a smaller school and plays the same position. He probably wouldn’t have been a major factor in the starting conversations but Onyemata’s suspension changes that.

Turner would have competed for a starting job before but more than likely, he’d have been a rotational piece. Now, however, Turner has a chance to be a regular contributor and potentially work his way into the starting lineup.

Normally, first-round picks are locks to make the starting lineup but Turner doesn’t have that luxury. He’ll have to work for it but he definitely has a chance to start and be a long-term starter for this team.
