Marcus Williams: Cons for New Orleans Saints retaining him

Really, I’m not finding many?

Marcus Williams is an elite safety, and safeties generally provide more surplus value on their contracts than any other position, based on how little they get paid compared to other positions. The highest-paid free agent safety this past offseason was John Johnson III at $11.25 million, so if Williams is only commanding a similar deal, then he’d be much more affordable for the Saints than their other free agents.

At the same time, since safeties are generally devalued, they are also easier to find. Thus, it may not make sense to invest significant resources on a player where his replacement can be easier found than with Lattimore or Ramczyk.

Now, the difference between Williams and his replacement might be more substantial than with the other two in terms of Wins Above Replacement, but it is a legitimate team-building question that New Orleans will have to answer.
