Ryan Ramczyk: Pros for New Orleans Saints retaining him
Ryan Ramczyk has yet to make a Pro Bowl, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t lived up to the investment the Saints made in him with the No. 32 overall pick in 2017. Rather, that demonstrates the problems with Pro Bowl voting itself, which is based more on popularity than anything else.
In 2019, Ramczyk was named Pro Football Focus’ run-blocker of the year. Their recent praise has gone beyond that, though, as they just ranked the Wisconsin product amongst the elite at his position:
Why wouldn’t a team want to have an elite tackle duo to build around?
Now, Armstead is also a free agent, but Ramczyk is also younger (27-years-old) and figures to have more peak seasons ahead. High-end tackles are a premium asset that are quite scarcely available on the open market, so it would make sense for the Saints to want to keep Ramczyk around for a long time.
If they are planning to let Armstead depart, they’ll want to prevent too much turnover on the offensive line. Whereas they once could rely on Drew Brees to prevent opposing pressure with a quick time to throw, that isn’t a luxury they have anymore, so keeping Ramczyk would be critical in terms of keeping their offense functioning.
