Saints rookie that’ll make an instant impact: Pete Werner

Second-round draft pick Pete Werner could come in and be an instant starter for Dennis Allen’s defense. While it feels unlikely that he’d immediately start over Zack Baun, he should have at least a fighting chance for the spot alongside Demario Davis.

Werner is more of an inside linebacker than Baun which could give him a leg up. Considered a reach at No. 60, the Saints jumped for Werner even before his former teammate Baron Browning was off the board.

In his final season with the Buckeyes, he totaled 54 tackles in 8 games. He also had a sack and 2.5 tackles for a loss. Werner proved his worth despite a shortened season, but it’s another question if he’ll be able to prove that in New Orleans.

The Saints had to let go of Kwon Alexander, who most would love to see return to the Big Easy. Alex Anzalone also left, joining Dan Campbell in Detroit. That will open up a spot.

According to a recent depth chart by John Sigler of Saints Wire, it could be Werner who steps into that No. 2 linebacker territory. A more natural fit alongside Davis, it would make sense, and it will be a positional group to keep an eye on.
