The Saints cut both Ozigbo and veteran back Jacquizz Rodgers.
They’ll be entering 2019 with just three running back and one fullback. Obviously, the team has Alvin Kamara leading the way. Behind him is Latavius Murray, who will be taking over Mark Ingram’s ground-and-pound role.
The third option, which forced the team to waived Ozigbo, will be Dwayne Washington. It was certainly a possibility prior to the deadline that the team would’ve kept both the proven veteran in Washington and the rookie in Ozigbo.
Ozigbo, an undrafted rookie back, played very well during the preseason. He averaged 4.4 yards per carry on 21 carries, putting him at just under 100 rushing yards in limited snaps. He also showed an aptitude at receiving, totaling over 60 yards and a touchdown.
If anything happens to Kamara, the Saints, who allowed both Washington and Ozigbo to display their pass-catching abilities this preseason, would rather have a veteran, proven back. However, expect Ozigbo to certainly find a spot either on the practice roster or elsewhere.
That said, this roster is looking like one that could repeat as NFC Champs.
