The Saints loved Emmanuel Butler in training camp. The former Northern Arizona receiver was a standout at the team’s training camp; however, that skillset was never truly put to play during the preseason.
Butler, an undrafted free agent, was expected to be apart of the team as of late July, but over the past month, his play just hasn’t lived up to the lofty expectations we put on him in training camp.
During the three preseason games he played in, Butler caught just 6 of 12 targets for 47 yards and a touchdown.
Overall, Butler played well, but it wasn’t justified taking him over hte likes of Keith Kirkwood or Tre’Quan Smith. Austin Carr, on the other hand, was the wild card that New Orleans opted to keep. They also kept return specialist Deone Harris.
After back-to-back seasons of over 1,000 yards at Northern Arizona, Butler’s stock increased but wasn’t enough to get him drafted. Now, he’s the underdog again and must find a way to crack another team’s roster or just end up back on New Orleans’ practice squad.
